Nouryon has been producing sulfuric acid more than 50 years in Mobile, Alabama, USA and San Lorenzo, Argentina. Sulfuric acid is the largest volume commodity chemical produced in the world. It is an odorless, colorless liquid with the largest application into the phosphate fertilizer industry. Sulfuric acid is corrosive and has reactive properties. Nouryon manufactures sulfuric acid directly from elemental sulfur (unlike many producers) yielding a high purity product with almost no contaminants. The product is sold in 93%, 96%, and 98% strengths and multiple grades solely in North and South America.

Major applications

Nouryon markets much of its sulfuric acid into the pulp and paper industry, often for use in chlorine dioxide generation (the high quality of our product is important in this application). Other applications where the quality is important is battery production. Nouryon sulfuric acid is also used in many other chemical processes and in various wastewater and pH control applications.

Handling/Product Stewardship

Nouryon ships sulfuric acid in tank trailers and railcars. These shipping containers are dedicated to sulfuric acid service to ensure the highest quality. Sulfuric acid is a highly corrosive product and must be handled with care. We offer customized technical service to our customers to help ensure the product is stored and handled in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.

Sulfuric Acid is sold in 93%, 96%, and 98% strengths. Nouryon has both electrolytic and commercial grades available. All product grades are pure with very little contaminants.

Oleum (Fuming Sulfuric Acid), Nouryon Argentina produces oleum at a 22% concentration of free SO3 from the super saturation of 98% sulfuric acid. The high quality of the raw materials used in the process leads to a chemically pure product, free of heavy metals and with low iron content. It is liquid at 22% concentration of free SO3 (equivalent to 105% concentration H2SO4) and iron content lower than 100 ppm. Oleum is mainly used in sulfonating processes such as detergent manufacture.
